Bromeliad Seeds
Germinating Bromeliad seeds is a good way to start bromeliad plants cheaply because brom seeds are relatively affordable. With a good success rate each seed will only cost a few cents but grow into a plant worth a great deal more. Postage costs when buying the seeds will also be typically inexpensive because they are small enough to post in an envelope.
There are several methods used to grow the seed. Different species may grow better using one method while another variety grows best using a different bromeliad germination technique.
Seeds are not buried in the growing medium. Instead they are placed on the surface and sprayed to help them make contact with the surface. This requires a humid environment to allow the seeds to remain moist. This is achieved by covering the individual containers with a clear film or lid or keeping all the germinating seeds in one large humid space such as a small greenhouse or closed aquarium.
Growing bromeliads from seed is a lot slower than harvesting pup plants. It may take several years to grow the seedlings into a plant large enough to flower. The results are often well worth the wait however.
